Design Marquee
Theme: 'Fantasy’ or 'Reality’. Response to the brief, in terms of: The written design statement; & its translation to the exhibit; Emotional impact; Appropriate & innovative command of space; Appropriate & innovative use of hard & soft materials; Quality of materials, workmanship and finish; Lighting effects.
Imagination & Creativity — overall impact, visual impact, innovation, adjacencies & associations, use of props, themes, etc. Presentation — effective use of site, ticketing, clarity of messages, quality of finish & construction, accessibility, staff outfits & demeanour. Appropriateness — how well the exhibit reflects the unique nature of the EFS. Note : lighting for night retailing is mandatory, and will be taken into account.
Theme: Contemporary Wedding. Professional Floral Designers: Interpretation of theme 25; Design (incl any lighting effects) 20; Use of Colour 15; Originality 20; Condition and Finish 20; Total 100.
Floral Art Clubs (Category 1 & 2): Overall Design (incl any lighting effects) 80; Colour Co-ordination 40; Interpretation & Expression 30; Distinction & Originality 30; Technique & Finish 20
Overall Impression: impact, engagement & inspiration, sense of theatre, plants & planting the major focus of the exhibit. Plant Quality: health, main plant attributes displayed effectively.
Plant Originality: including newness, distinction and/or rarity. Plant Innovation: innovative plant use and quality of cultural practice: eg. flowering out of season; presentation eg. topiary
Interpretation: clear accurate plant identification (via discrete labels or plans). On site lighting is welcomed but not compulsory.
Judging Notes
This is your response to the theme, or your statement of intent for your exhibit. Judges, and visitors, will use this to clarify your intended message and as a reference for understanding your work as a whole. Things to consider include:
· Does your interpretation of the brief give a clear message?
· Do all aspects of your exhibit work together to give an harmonious, consistent impact?
· Does your written brief relate directly to, and complement, your finished work?
· How is the design brief displayed? Does it work with the exhibit as a whole? Will it be easily read by thousands of visitors?
Overall Impression
· Does your exhibit look like it has always been there and is of a permanent nature?
· Have you made the best use of space? Does the site look full and complete in accordance with the design?
· Is the backdrop appropriate and in harmony with the exhibit as a whole?
· Is the exhibit attractive from all the sides from which it is viewed?
· Is the exhibit finished properly, including where it is adjacent to other sites?
· Anything that does not directly contribute to the design should not be visible including tools, construction materials; plant pots or bags; product branding; marquee walls; construction elements etc.
Design
· Have you applied appropriate disciplines of design in terms of colour, texture, scale and unity?
· Is your design appropriate to the space, materials and plants selected?
· Does your design respond appropriately to the theme (where one applies)?
Lighting
· Details being established and will be discussed with each applicant.
Construction
· Do materials look authentic?
· Is the structure sound and will it cope with thousands of visitors?
· Does the display look permanent, solid and substantial?
· Is all construction safe and finished to a high standard?
Plants, Planting and Labelling
· Are the plants of highest quality, appropriate size and well placed?
· Is your plant placement horticulturally correct in terms of plants being in their ideal environment eg. shade, full sun, swamp, sand etc?
· Are the plants well established and the attributes for which they are being shown obvious i.e. Buds, flowers, foliage, fruit or form?
· Visitors are always interested in the plants – do you have a planting plan available?
· If you have used labels, are they visible, appropriate to your design, clear and accurate?
· Does your signage work with your design and overall look?
· Are your sponsors appropriately acknowledged?
