In the months leading up to the Ellerslie Flower Show, many talented designers, exhibitors and students put their hearts and souls into crafting the wonderful creations that amaze, inspire and entertain visitors. The Ellerslie Flower Show Awards aim to reward designers with a series of prestigious awards for excellence in horticulture, lighting and landscape design.
There are two new awards this year, the Ellerslie Flower Show Young Designer of the Year Award and the Ellerslie Flower Show Best in Show Award. Alongside these are two exciting competitions, the Flemings Student Design Competition and the Flixonase Low Allergy Garden Competition.
Ellerslie Flower Show Judges Supreme Award
The ultimate aspiration for exhibitors, this is the pre-eminent Ellerslie Flower Show award, widely noted by the design and horticultural community.
Ellerslie Flower Show Peoples Choice Award
This award is judged purely by visitors on the first two days of the Show, who vote for their favourite exhibit throughout the course of the day. To vote for your favourite exhibit please pick up a competition form during the show from Visitor Services or any on-site information booth. Voting for this award takes place on the Wednesday and Thursday of the show so that the exhibitor who wins this award can reap the rewards and status of having this award on their exhibit for the entire show. By filling out a form you put yourself in for the chance to win some fantastic prizes.
Ellerslie Flower Show Supreme Award for Horticultural Excellence presented by the Nursery Garden Industry Association of New Zealand (NGIA)
Plant appropriateness and plant associations are the basis for this award, applicable to all exhibits featuring horticultural material.
Ellerslie Flower Show Supreme Award for Design Excellence
Key attributes of design excellence are applied to all exhibits at the Show, from floral design through to retail gardens.
Ellerslie Flower Show Supreme Award for Lighting Excellence
The beauty of a garden in the evening is made evident through effective lighting, an art and skill in its own right, recognised in this award.
Ellerslie Flower Show Young Designer of the Year Award
The Garden Design Travel Scholarship is a brand new initiative from the Ellerslie Flower Show and will provide a talented Kiwi garden designer with the opportunity of a lifetime and a title that could launch a star designer’s career. In addition to being named Young Designer of the Year, the winner will receive an $8000 grant to travel overseas and study international landscaping and design. All entrants competing must be either a student or have been in the business less than five years since graduating.
Ellerslie Flower Show 'Best in Show’ Award
Another new initiative for the 2005 Ellerslie Flower Show, this horticultural award provides an exciting opportunity for growers and nurseries exhibiting at the Show. Participants will be asked to submit a single variety of plant or flower to compete in the overall award for Best in Show and medals gained will be displayed on winning products at retailers around New Zealand.
Ellerslie Flower Show Retail Awards
Gold, Silver, Bronze and Merit are also awarded in the retail shopping sections. The challenge for retailers is to present a retail site that reflects the horticultural essence of the Show through creative use of décor and displays.
Flemings Student Design Competition
Australia’s Flemings Nurseries sponsor this competition, providing a fantastic opportunity for New Zealand tertiary students to launch a landscape design career. The lucky winner will be hosted at the Melbourne Flower Show by Flemings Nurseries and will be funded by both Flemings and the Ellerslie Flower Show to build the winning New Zealand design.
Low Allergy Garden Competition presented by Ellerslie Flower Show
Ellerslie Flower Show is proud to present the Flixonase Secondary Schools Competition. Flixonase is bringing to life the work of one New Zealand secondary school student’s design, which you can see in the Sunday magazine Exhibition Gardens.
