Flemings Award Puts Young NZ Designer On The Map

17 November 2005

Eva Zombori has won the design opportunity of a lifetime after being selected as a finalist in the Flemings Student Design Competition at this year’s Ellerslie Flower Show.

The Unitec student’s innovative garden design was inspired by the theme of ‘La Dolce Vita’ – ‘The Sweet Life’.

Rob Small, CEO of Flemings Nurseries and one of the Show’s NZ Gardener Speaker Series participants, says Eva’s garden design matched the brief perfectly.

“Eva’s garden is characterised by beautiful design elements and it met all the necessary requirements.

All of the garden designs were evaluated against a number of criteria, including set budgets for both construction and materials; and exclusive use of plants produced by Flemings Nurseries,” says Small.

As a finalist in the Flemings Student Design Competition, Eva will join three other finalists from Australia in Melbourne, where their four designs will be constructed at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show. The overall design winner will receive the Don Fleming Student Award, including a trip for two to the Chelsea Flower Show in London in May 2006 and $5,000 cash.

Ellerslie Flower Show will also give Eva a $3000 grant to construct a garden at next year’s Show.

Eva’s design garden reflected Melbourne and sister city Milan, showing the difference between the two cities and their coming together with circles of colour split into halves to symbolise the partnership.

The Ellerslie Flower Show 2005 is Like Never Before, with innovation, inspiration and floral delights. The Show blooms from 16–20 November at Auckland Botanic Gardens.
