Supreme Award Winners

The Ellerslie Flower Show Supreme Awards recognise and reward excellence in horticulture and landscape design — and in 2004 there’s a new award for lighting excellence.

The Judges’ Supreme Award — Lakeside Art Garden, Jan Hart Landscapes

This is the pre-eminent prize at the Ellerslie Flower Show and is awarded to the exhibit that, in the opinion of our expert judges, achieves the highest overall standard at the show.

Judges’ comments:
An inspiring and sophisticated public landscape on many levels. Excellent articulation of space with a series of unfolding experiences. The subtle association of art with native plants has been expertly curated. A place to return to.

The People’s Choice Award — Dalton’s Garden, Xanthe White

You be the judge! The People’s Choice Award gives you a chance to have your say.

The Design Excellence Award — Flixonase 24 Hour Low Allergy Garden, designed by Xanthe White of Earthroom Landscapes

This award goes to the exhibit that best exemplifies innovation and outstanding design.

Judges’ comments:
Xanthe White has designed and executed a knockout design which employs with refinement and maturity every skill of the garden designer. The three linked spaces are innovatively attuned to the brief as a series of courtyard gardens appealing to allergy sufferers. Everything from the big idea to the smallest detail has been fully thought through, to create a magical garden by both day and night.

The Design Excellence Award – Highly Commended -Stevenson Garden ZoneDesigned by Leo Jew

Judges’ comments:
Leo Jew has designed a bold and insightful work which successfully commands the entry to the show. The piece invites one to enter and offers continually changing readings and experiences, from the breathtaking serpentine planting in the foreground to the surreal beach scene at the rear. The design responds brilliantly to the sloping ground. This work will provoke much discussion of landscape as art, and art as landscape.

The Lighting Excellence Award — Flixonase 24 Hour Low Allergy Garden, designed by Xanthe White of Earthroom Landscapes

For the first time this year, the Ellerslie Flower Show is open until 10pm on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday nights. The showgrounds will be lit up after dark as exhibitors and designers show off with spectacular lighting effects. Our new award for Lighting Excellence recognises that lighting design is an art and skill in its own right, creating ambience, accentuating key plants and ensuring that a garden can be enjoyed in full.

Judges’ comments:
The division of this garden into three rooms enabled the designer to work with a wide range of lighting effects, which she did with great panache. The lighting was by turns risky, graceful, dramatic and dynamic.

The Horticultural Excellence Award — Jo Plants, Terry Hatch

The premier planting award at the Ellerslie Flower Show recognises excellence in such skills as plant selection and synergy, plant health and unique qualities, use of colour and the overall impact achieved.

Judges’ comments:
The message was clear and concise. The plants were exceptionally well grown, and nicely displayed. Divaricating plants are unique and should be better known by the public.

The Horticultural Excellence Award– Highly Commended — O2 Landscapes, Designed by Philip Smith.
Judges’ comments:
Commended for well-grown and extremely interesting plants with a clear message of integration of rare natives with exotics. The backdrop was wonderful.
